BCRUA/Round Rock/Cedar Park

Zebra Mussel Control

BCRUA, Cedar Park, and Leander operate three floating intakes adjacent to the Cedar Park WTP with a combined capacity of 70.5 MGD. The Walker Partners team has developed a multi-barrier approach of preventative control and maintenance strategies to prevent settlement and attachment and induce mussel mortality. To reduce costs and environmental impacts, the project includes a joint sodium permanganate chemical delivery system at the Cedar Park WTP that is designed to treat all three intakes. A specialized metal coating system applied through thermal spray process has also been utilized to coat existing screens. Underwater dive inspection has revealed that the coating has successfully prevented zebra mussel attachment and biofouling.

Zebra Mussels can have a devastating impact on local water supplies and are a menace to water supply systems. With our multi-barrier approach, we reduced costs and environmental impact for the Brushy Creek Regional Utility Authority.
