Jed Walker Receives Distinguished Graduate Award

George E. “Jed” Walker, Jr. was recently honored as a Texas A&M University Zachry Department of Civil Engineering Distinguished Graduate. This award is given annually to a select group of individuals who are nominated by fellow Texas A&M graduates and selected by the Texas A&M Civil Engineering Advisory Board.

Following his graduation from Richfield High School in Waco, Mr. Walker attended Texas A&M University, graduating in 1984. He began his career in Austin, where he worked for six years at Cunningham Graves, a regional civil engineering firm highly regarded in land development design, municipal public works infrastructure design, and transportation design. In 1990, Mr. Walker moved back home to Waco. During the course of his career, Mr. Walker has spear-headed over 3,000 civil engineering projects in our community. Notable projects include the Cameron Park Zoo, Baylor’s McLane Stadium, City of West Disaster Zone Infrastructure Reconstruction, Waco Regional Airport Expansions and Rehabilitations, numerous municipal infrastructure projects for cities in the Central Texas Area, and significant land development projects. In 2004, Mr. Walker founded Walker Partners, a full service civil engineering and surveying firm based in Waco. Since that time, Walker Partners has grown to add offices in Killeen and Austin.

In addition to professional accomplishments, the Distinguished Graduate award selection is based on character and community involvement. Mr. Walker has served on numerous boards and commissions in Waco, including serving as president of the Waco Rotary Club, Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Boy Scouts, Metropolitan Planning Organization (former chairman), and Reicher Catholic High School Board. Mr. Walker is also involved with professional organizations such as American Society of Civil Engineers (past-president of the Central Texas Branch), National Society of Professional Engineers (2006 Engineer of the Year), and American Water Works Association. Additionally, Mr. Walker was recognized for his integrity, strong character, and generosity. Mr. Walker continues to give back to Texas A&M University through financial donations, sponsoring Survey Camp, speaking to student groups, and giving advice to students as they prepare for their careers.

"I believe in relationships. At the end of the day, our greatest rewards don’t come from the projects we have designed, the money we have earned, or the awards we have won; but rather, our greatest rewards are the relationships that we build while on our journey and our ability to maintain those relationships throughout our life," said Mr. Walker during his acceptance speech.

Mr. Walker resides in Waco with his wife Rebecca. Their son, Parks, recently graduated from Texas A&M University and is a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army.

The Zachry Department of Civil Engineering Distinguished Graduate Award has been given annually since 2000. Mr. Walker was recognized at the annual Distinguished Graduate Banquet in College Station on Thursday, November 3, 2016. In the same banquet, Mr. Walker and his wife Rebecca, were also recognized for establishing an endowed scholarship for the Texas A&M University Civil Engineering Department.
